The Colorado Rapids’ Nat Borchers and Kansas City Wizards’ Josh Wolff compete for a head ball in Kansas City, Missouri on September 25, 2004.
The popularity of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup made me think of the two seasons I covered Major League Soccer for Icon Sports Media in 2003-04.
Icon Sports Media, now Icon Sportswire, is a photojournalism wire service founded in 1999 that provides daily sports images to major national and international publications, books, websites, and major advertising campaigns.
When I shot the match between the Colorado Rapids and the Kansas City Wizards (renamed Sporting Kansas City in 2010) at Arrowhead Stadium on September 25, 2004, I set up on the sideline near midfield. As I covered the action, the Rapids’ Nat Borchers and the Wizards’ Josh Wolff came together for a head ball. Borchers tried to block Wolff and grabbed a handful of his jersey. While they battled for position, Wolff’s jersey was pulled over his head. The play made an interesting image.
Ten years later, both men are still with Major League Soccer. Nat Borchers plays for the Portland Timbers and Josh Wolff is an assistant coach for Columbus Crew.
