Recently, stand-up comedian and television host Bill Maher criticized Noah, a movie that stars Russell Crowe and is loosely based on the Biblical account of Noah’s Ark in the book of Genesis.
Maher said, “It’s about a psychotic mass murderer who gets away with it, and his name is God.” Maher adds, “What kind of tyrant punishes everyone just to get back at the few he’s mad at?”
Personally, I’ve never thought Bill Maher was humorous or insightful, but I must admit that he has become extremely successful by creating a television persona that is outspoken and controversial.
The truth is that God is not a “psychotic mass murderer.” He is holy and perfect and despises sin. Paul writes in Romans 3:23 (NIV) – “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
God judges us and we are accountable to Him. We do not hold Him accountable to us.
Fortunately, God has not abandoned us. Instead, He has reached out to us and bridged the gap between His holiness and our wickedness through His son, Christ Jesus. When Jesus was crucified on the cross, He bore God’s punishment for our sins. Three days after being placed in the grave, Christ Jesus rose from the dead to give eternal life to everyone who believes in His resurrection.
The most famous verse in the Bible, John 3:16 (NIV), states “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
This Easter, remember that God is not a “psychotic mass murderer.” He is a loving and merciful Father who forgives the sins of His people if they proclaim Christ Jesus as their personal savior.
