krav maga: orange belt

Last summer, Patty and I joined a martial arts studio to learn Krav Maga, an Israeli military self-defense system that mixes techniques from boxing, Muay Thai, jiu-jitsu, and wrestling. Although Krav Maga students try to avoid confrontation, we are taught skills to finish a fight quickly with vicious attacks to the most vulnerable parts of the body including the face, throat, ribs and groin.

For our orange belt test on December 19, 2013, we had to escape from different choke holds and bear hugs. We also had to show several kickboxing combinations of punches, kicks, elbows and body blows. Our final challenge included stepping up to our instructor who held a board in his hands and break it with a spinning heel kick. Now, we are working towards our purple belts.
