We earned our yellow belts in Krav Maga on September 26, 2013.
Last summer, Patty and I joined a martial arts studio to learn Krav Maga, an Israeli military self-defense system that mixes techniques from boxing, Muay Thai, jiu-jitsu, and wrestling. Although Krav Maga students try to avoid confrontation, we are taught skills to finish a fight quickly with vicious attacks to the most vulnerable parts of the body including the face, throat, ribs and groin.
The training has been fun, but brutal. Our bodies have been punched, poked and pummeled by instructors and students. We have been struck, slapped, and smacked in the head. We have been knocked around, choked out, cut up, thrown down, hit, kicked and bruised on a regular basis.
A few months ago, I broke my right pinky toe while doing crescent kicks, and recently, Patty severely sprained her left ankle while defending herself in a four-on-one sparring drill in class. The injuries did not stop us from our goal which was to graduate from white belt to yellow belt.
We passed our belt test on September 26, 2013. We were recognized in front of the class by our instructors as they handed us our new belts. We hope to have our orange belts by Christmas.
