The “supermoon” rises over the University of Kansas campus in Lawrence, Kansas on May 5, 2012. According to NASA, the moon was at its closest point to Earth this year during its elliptical orbit so it appeared 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than other full moons of 2012.
