My favorite referee, Dee Kantner, worked the women’s basketball game between South Dakota State and K-State at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan, Kansas on November 30, 2010. Dee is the supervisor of officials for the WNBA and one of the top officials in NCAA Division I competition. Personally, I think Dee calls a great game because she’s tough, fair, and witty.
Dee and Violet Palmer made history together in 1997 when they were signed by the NBA as the first female referees in any major U.S. professional sport. She and Palmer officiated the NBA season opener between the Vancouver Grizzlies and the Dallas Mavericks on October 31, 1997.
Dee has officiated six women’s NCAA Final Fours, including four national championship games, the 1994 and 1998 Women’s World Championship, and the 2000 Olympics.
