Marcia Merrick, left, passes out clothing to strangers on December 25, 2007.
I met Marcia Merrick a few years ago through my church. She is the director of Reaching Out, Inc., a missions ministry that helps the homeless in Kansas City, Missouri. She is an amazing woman whose heart for others is surpassed only by her heart for Christ Jesus. She has given away her own mattress, her own dining room table, her own food, money, clothes and her life to the less fortunate.
Recently, Marcia was nominated for The View’s Ultimate Volunteer on ABC. She received over 50,000 votes and placed third out of the ten finalists. I was disappointed for Marcia that she didn’t win the grand prize: one million Starpoints from Starwood Hotels & Resorts Hawaii, the equivalent of 25 round trip tickets from Los Angeles to Honolulu or a five night stay at the Royal Hawaiian Resort for ten years. After the contest, Marcia posted a Facebook message stating, “Nobody should be disappointed. We won getting people aware of the homeless people of Kansas City. Thanks again for all your help.”
“Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.” – Hebrews 13:2 (NIV)
