Recently, a client asked me to shoot photos at The Crossroads KC at Grinder’s, an outdoor music venue in downtown Kansas City. The featured act was Stryper, a Christian hard rock group. 25 years ago, Stryper was my favorite band. I owned all their cassettes, I attended all their concerts and I learned all their songs on my guitar. The walls of my room were covered with their posters and dozens of magazine photos. I was excited to see them live again. I am still a huge fan.
Stryper’s tour rolled into Kansas City on October 9, 2009 in support of their new CD, “Murder By Pride” and to celebrate their 25th anniversary as a band. Michael, Oz, Tim and Robert played some new material and their greatest hits to a small group of loyal fans including: “Soldiers Under Command”, “Murder By Pride”, “Loud ‘N’ Clear”, “The Rock That Makes Me Roll”, “Reach Out”, “Calling On You”, “Free”, “More Than A Man”, “Alive”, “Peace Of Mind”, “4 Leaf Clover”, “Open Your Eyes”, “All For One”, “The Way” and “To Hell With The Devil.”
Stryper is still true to themselves and their message. They proudly (and loudly) sing about God’s redemptive love through Christ Jesus. They still throw Bibles into the crowd. They still wear yellow and black striped clothing; a testament to the scripture verse that inspires their name: “But He (Jesus Christ) was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed.” – Isaiah 53:5 (KJV)
“Make a joyful noise unto the Lord. . . and sing praise.” – Psalms 98:4 (KJV)
