Recently, I met Chrissie Wellington. She is the best female triathlete on Earth. Since turning professional in January 2007, she has won 16 of her last 24 races. On October 11, 2008, she won the Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. She is the first British athlete to win the Ironman.
I was not in Hawaii to see Chrissie win the Ironman Triathlon World Championship, but I was in Lawrence, Kansas to see her win the Ironman 70.3 Kansas Triathlon on June 14, 2009. She erupted with pure joy at the end of the race as if she had just won her second Ironman Triathlon World Championship.
After her victory, she stood at the finish line for hours cheering and applauding the other competitors, posing for pictures and signing autographs.
